Based on our online research, we knew the odds. A healthy woman with no known fertility issues has a 5% chance of conceiving in any given month. By the age of 45 that drops to less than 1%. We were in the middle of that age range. With me being 42, and 10 months into a new marriage we decided to have a child. But I had previously had a bilateral tubal ligation with the Pomeroy method 10 years earlier.
Since I was a surgical technologist for many years, I very carefully did my research. I wanted a surgeon who was skilled and knowledgable. Since I knew I would only get one chance to reconnect my tubes correctly, I wanted someone with a proven track record of success. I chose Dr Levin.
As we knew time was not on our side, we chose to forgo all pre-op fertility testing Dr. Levin suggested. He offered no guarantee of success, but we felt beyond any doubt that the surgery would be successful. You see, we are very spiritually strong and spiritually guided. We knew that we would have no trouble conceiving and when we did, we would have a little girl and would name her Emma Faith. (I already had 4 boys, 3 of them already grown. My husband already had 1 boy from his previous marriage). To put our trust this much into Dr Levin that he would help us to have our little girl, Emma Faith, was truly based on our faith in what we read about Dr Levin. He had us booked and on the surgery schedule within just a week or so of receiving our payment.
The surgery was uneventful. The staff was all wonderful and the process from the time we arrived in Louisville till the time we left was seamless. The staff at the hotel was wonderful and knew all about the reason why we were there. Even the breakfast offered there was a perfect start for my husband's long day ahead.
The first month following surgery I did not have a normal menstrual cycle. I'm guessing that is because of the ovarian manipulation that was done during surgery. The second month following surgery, my husband was working out of state during my fertile timeframe. The third month following surgery we conceived. Just like that. As I was 42, and because of the increased risk of an ectopic pregnancy from the surgery, my local OB/GYN treated my case as a high risk pregnancy. I had several serum HCG tests to determine that my levels were indeed rising. By 8 1/2 weeks am ultrasound confirmed an intrauterine pregnancy and a corpus luteum on the right side. It seemed as if I was beating the fertility odds. At 11 weeks a CVG (chorionic villus sampling) procedure was done and confirmed no chromosomal defects and a very healthy baby girl.
Exactly a year and 1 week after my surgery, at exactly 40 weeks gestation to the day, our beautiful and healthy Emma Faith was born on November 4, 2013. She is now almost 12 weeks old. I am 44 1/2 and although our odds of conceiving are down to about 1-2% we will start trying to conceive our next beautiful little girl that we will name Bella Carmen. Yes, just as we knew beyond any doubt that Dr Levin would help us bring forth Emma into this world, we know he will also help us bring forth Bella.
