Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! WOW! This past year has flown by. I wanted to email you our wonderful news….WE HAD A BABY! Please let me share my story as I love reading about other people that you have helped to bring a baby into this world. I welcome anyone that would like to talk to me about my experience so please be sure to include my email!
My name is Dawn Marie and I had a tubal reversal surgery in September of 2010. My story is like so many others. I was married at the very young age of 21, but waited ten years to begin a family. My first son, Zackary, was born in January 2005 and I decided to have my tubes tied before he turned a year old. I knew that if we had any more children, our marriage would be over. The marriage ultimately ended and I was a single mom with a 2 year old son. I often kept in touch with my first love, Tommy. We dated in high school but broke up when his family moved out of state. We would email each other a couple of times a year just to check in and see how each other is doing. One of those emails reached me during my divorce and I soon learned Tommy was going through his own divorce. We began talking on the phone for hours at a time and planned to meet up again as we were still living in separate states. We finally met up after 21 years and started a long distance relationship for the next year. Tommy finally relocated back to Texas and we were married in September 2009. Tommy did not have any children of his own and he knew that we may not been able to have any children together. He was a great step-father to my son and I wanted so badly to give him a child of his own. I researched tubal reversals before we were married and had found Dr. Levin on the internet. It was a wealth of information and made me feel confident that I would be able to get a reversal done when the time came.
I was referred to a fertility doctor here in Houston and was informed that I was not a candidate for a reversal but instead should undergo IVF. I accepted the diagnosis, thinking that I live in one of the largest cities in the country and these doctors would know. I underwent the first round of IVF with good success during the medication/injection process but when the eggs were retrieved, we only had 4 eggs. We implanted one egg with assumptions that we would have three to freeze but the eggs did not continue to develop and we did not get pregnant. We immediately started the next round again with the same success. No pregnancy and no eggs to freeze. With the costs stacking up, we decided to seek out another doctor to see if we would get better results. We met with the new doctor and decided we may be able to afford to do two more rounds of IVF so we got on the schedule. That afternoon, I came home and began the project of cleaning off an old laptop to give to my son so he would play games. I came back across Dr. Levin’s website and I had the feeling that this was a sign. I was so excited for my husband to come home that night so I could discuss this option with him. It felt like a way that we could gain control of the process again instead of relying on everyone else. After talking with him, we were both on board and the next day I got in touch with Dr. Levin’s office.
I was never apprehensive about the surgery and was eager for the date to arrive. We knew in our hearts this was the right decision for us. It was a no-brainer because the reversal surgery was cheaper than our next round of IVF. The day of surgery, of course I was nervous. Everything went smooth but I had a few complications recovering from the anesthesia and pain pills, but we had planned to stay an extra day for recovery and I am so glad we did. We came home and waited the six weeks before we could start trying and we got pregnant immediately. I couldn’t believe it! I tried not to get too excited because of
the complications that could come with a reversal surgery. My local OB/GYN (also a Levin!) is very aggressive and ordered the necessary bloodwork and ultrasounds. We were unable to locate an embryo so we decided to terminate. Shortly thereafter we were scheduled for a HSG to inspect the tubes and ensure they were opened. The radiologist gave us the good news that both tubes were open and even added that it is the best reversal surgery she had ever seen with absolutely no scarring or blockage.
We kept trying but each month, no pregnancy. I was beginning to think the doctor’s were right and maybe my age was affecting the eggs. I started to think that I may never have another child. Exactly one year after the first pregnancy, we were pregnant again! My doctor again ordered up the necessary bloodwork and I
got the call a few days later that everything looked great. I could not believe it. We waited to tell our families until we saw the heartbeat on the ultrasound. At that time, we knew this was really going to happen. Three weeks after my 40th birthday on August 2nd, I gave birth to Luke Thomas Henderson weighing 6 pounds 7.7 ounces. We feel so blessed to have had the opportunity to bring Luke into this world
I am so thankful that I found Dr. Levin on the internet and just wished I would have traveled to Louisville before undergoing any of the IVF treatments. For anyone out there wondering if they should have the surgery, I definitely think you should go for it. It allowed us to gain control of the process and put it back in God’s hands.
