First I need to say a HUGE Thank You to Dr. Levin and his staff for everything they have done. If it weren’t for them I wouldn’t be writing this at all.
To start from the beginning, I got pregnant with my first child when I was 19 years old. I married his father and had a second child with him. Then when my daughter was 2, we got divorced. Throughout this time I was on birth control. I have tried many different kinds, I was on the pill when I got pregnant with my daughter, I tried the depo shot, and I tried the patch. I also got pregnant when I was using the patch. I was very diligent about using these birth controls and my Dr. thinks that my body just grows “immune” to birth control after I have been on it for a certain amount of time. So, while I was pregnant with my third child, his father decided that he didn’t want to be with me anymore pretty much as soon as he knew I was pregnant.
When I was approximately 7 months pregnant I met the man of my dreams, and we started dating. I did tell him that after my son was born I was going to get my tubes tied and if he wanted children of his own then we shouldn’t be together because I didn’t want anymore children. I was having enough troubles with my first two children pitting their father against me so they could get what they wanted and things like that so I couldn’t imagine having anymore children after my third child. He was ok with that and a few months later we actually got married.
Everything was good for a while and he treated my kids like they were his own and was a wonderful husband. Well, after about 2 years I started thinking about wanting a child with him and started doing research into our options. I found an IVF clinic in Chicago, which is about 2 hours from us, that was doing a study on a new drug and we qualified to be a part of this study so we tried to have a child through IVF. Everything seemed to be going good with that they were able to extract 6 eggs to fertilize and we were suppose to go down there 5 days later to have some implanted. On the day we were suppose to go there we got a call from the clinic saying that the eggs were not multiplying as quickly as they would have liked so they couldn’t implant them at all. That completely devastated us as we could NEVER afford to actually run a cycle of IVF at $10,000 per time with no guarantees.
It took me about 6 months to even think about what to do next because I was so upset about this. Finally, without discussing it with my husband I started doing research into Tubal Reversals. I didn’t even know if it was possible because when I had my ligation my doctor emphasized that this was PERMANENT and there was no going back. The very first web site I found was Dr. Levin’s. Of course everything sounded “too good to be true” so I continued to do more research, even calling the dr’s and hospitals in my area to compare prices and qualifications. I continually came back to Dr. Levin as there was no one with his qualifications especially at his price. I was a little skeptical about finding a dr. on the internet, but I couldn’t deny everything that I read. Finally, I decided to talk to my husband about it and he couldn’t believe that I was even considering this, but he was all for it.
I immediately contacted Dr. Levin and sent him my surgical report, which didn’t really tell him much except that I had a triple cautery TL. It didn’t even tell him how much had been removed or anything, but when I talked to him he was extremely optimistic about my results. We started doing this in October of 2008, which just happened to be around the time that we could update our insurance information for the next year. We decided to set up his flexible spending account for the following year; we were able to get $4000 to put towards our surgery. That was available Jan. 1, 2009 and we were going to use our tax return for the rest of our surgery so I set up surgery for Thursday, May 14, 2009, knowing that we would definitely have our tax return back before then, and I was in school full time and that was the week after classes let out for the semester.
We went to Kentucky for my surgery, and Dr. Levin was able to “fix” me with tube lengths of 4.5 cm on both sides. During my procedure Dr. Levin found a strange mass of tissue in my left tube. He removed it and sent it to the lab because he couldn’t tell what it could have been. He told us that he had never really seen anything like it but it looked like an ectopic pregnancy. He also told us he would call us when the lab got back to him with the results. We drove home on Friday, I slept most of the way, and that evening at 10:30 pm, we received a call from Dr. Levin with the results of our labs. I did not answer because I was already sleeping, so first thing the next morning…ON A SATURDAY…Dr. Levin called us to let us know that yes that mass was an ectopic pregnancy (in the left tube even before the tubal reversal), but he didn’t think it should affect our chances of conceiving since it was found and removed. We were given a 6 week wait to try to conceive which put us at the end of June.
We decided to start trying right away figuring it would take us at least a few months to become pregnant as I still had some school to finish and I wanted to graduate before we had another child. Well, low and behold, we got pregnant the very first month TTC. I got pregnant July 5, 2009. We contacted Dr. Levin right away and he ordered all the tests until 6 weeks when I had my first Ultrasound and found a beautiful sac in the uterus where it belonged.
Then I set up an appointment with my ob/gyn, but a week later I came home from work and had some spotting so we called my dr.’s office and went in to have another U/S to make sure everything was ok, and that’s when they found the SECOND sac in my uterus. I WAS PREGNANT WITH TWINS!!!
Shortly after that they realized that they were identical twins and shared a placenta so we had to have MANY U/S done to make sure that they were growing well. I carried my two beautiful boys to 37 weeks and 3 days. They were born naturally on March 8, 2010 at 6 lbs. 2 oz. and 5 lbs. 13 oz. Now they are almost 5 months old and just as sweet as can be.
I wouldn’t have had this possibility if it weren’t for Dr. Levin and his staff. I truly believe that he is a miracle worker, and if you are considering having this surgery you will be in great hands with Dr. Levin. I would recommend him to anyone that is asking. I have NEVER had a doctor that cared so much about his patients that he would call on a Friday night or Saturday to let you know the results of lab work. I have also heard from other patients that he has called them while he was on vacation. I know there isn’t another doctor that would do that!!!
Thank you again Dr. Levin, you are the BEST!!!!!
