Breathing Issues: It is not unusual for patients to avoid coughing and deep breathing in the early hours and days after surgery. They do so because of pain or discomfort cause by expanding and contracting the various muscle groups associated with breathing and coughing. It is extremely important to take a very deep breath and to cough several times every 10 minutes while awake to prevent congestion in your chest and the possible resultant development of pneumonia.
If this type of maneuver dose not quickly resolve your breathing issues then you should go straight to the Emergency Room at the hospital! There can rarely be very serious issues associated with difficultry breathing, such as a Pulmonary Embolis, which if left untreated can lead to death. So if you have breathing issues, including Shortness of Breath, go quickly to the Emergency Room!
